“Beautiful People,” taken from the Pet Shop Boys‘ Yes, was released in Germany as an exclusive third single a few weeks ago (at the request of the band’s label there, EMI Germany).
But you don’t need to “sprechen sie deutsch” to purchase the single via the Pet Shop Boys’ official shop, which includes the song’s original demo, the non-album B-side “Fugitive,” plus the Tom Stephan mix of “Up And Down.” (“Up And Down” was a non-album B-side that made the cut of second Yes single, “Did You See Me Coming?”)
Tom Stephan and the Pet Shop Boys have a long history together, stretching back to his mixes of “Paninaro ’95” (credited to Tracy & Sharon). Switching to the Superchumbo moniker, Stephen reworked “New York City Boy” (1999), “Sexy Northerner” (2003), and “Minimal” (2006). “Up And Down” marks the first PSB mix credited to his real name, and was actually a free download to promote the release of “Did You See Me Coming?.” (Someone should revoke my Pet Shop Boys Superfan card, since I missed out.)
Stephan’s take on “Up And Down” reminds me of another of his mixes with a Pet Shop Boys connection. In 2003, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe collaborated with visual artist Sam-Taylor Wood on a cover of Donna Summer’s “Love To Love You Baby.” The limited 12″ release featured a Superchumbo remix on the flip, which I still adore. That’s one reason I love this mix of “Up And Down.” Another is Stephan’s inspired incorporation of a drum sample from the Pet Shop Boys’ 1986 single, “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots Of Money).” Up and down, present and past.
