Track of the Moment

I didn’t start the ‘Fire’

Though I already outed myself as a literal johnny-come-lately back in August regarding Kings Of Leon and my love for “Use Somebody,” I’m still a little embarrassed to feature the band’s “Sex On Fire” today. The song originally served the first single from their 2008 album Only By The Night, reaching #1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart and the top spot in Australia, Finland, Ireland, and the UK. “Sex On Fire” was later nominated for two Grammy Awards, with the band taking home one for Best Rock Vocal Performance by Duo or Group.

But mainstream pop success here in the States has been slower to come for Kings Of Leon. It’s really only in the second half of 2009 that the band broke big, as “Use Somebody” hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September. And so the older single, “Sex On Fire,” has been re-serviced to pop radio to capitalize on the success of “Use Somebody.” That’s why you’re hearing a song that came in at #40 on Rolling Stone‘s 100 Best Singles of 2008 more these days, and why this is a ‘Fire’ still worth catching:
