More of what we all want

Most “new” Christmas songs rarely catch on (ahem, “Step Into Christmas”), but Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is one huge exception, widely accepted as a worthy modern addition to the classic yuletide canon.

Written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff for her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has really become the gift that keeps on giving. The Wall Of Sound-like single helped ring up 12 million copies of Carey’s holiday set, and has continued to dominate the airplay and sales charts in the many winters since its release. Artists as disparate as John Mayer, Shania Twain, and My Chemical Romance have covered the song, and rom-com fans recognize “All I Want For Christmas Is You” as having played a central role in the climax of 2003’s Love Actually (sung by Olivia Olson).

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of hitting the holiday-song jackpot, Carey oversaw production of a new full-length dance mix of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” She laid down some new vocal parts for the occasion, with Low Sunday (Ron Haney, Bart Schoudel, and Joey Arbagey) handling remix duties. This extended treatment of the infectious Christmas tune was way overdue, because who would argue with keeping Carey’s joy and merriment going even longer? Hear here:

But that’s not all. On Thursday, the RIAA came calling with a special present for Carey’s song. The “All I Want For Christmas Is You” ringtone was certified double-platinum, becoming the first holiday ringtone to reach that status. So yes, Sir Elton, you may have been knighted, but only Mariah holds the title of Christmas Queen.
