Last Tuesday, Regina Spektor released a cover of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” to benefit the Doctors Without Borders Emergency Relief Fund. Both artists are donating 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the iTunes exclusive, which will help support continuing earthquake relief efforts in Haiti and Chile.
On Radiohead’s original track from 1997’s OK Computer, Thom Yorke sings from an emotional distance (devoid of any emotion, really), in keeping with the album’s theme of isolation in the modern world. But with Spektor’s angelic voice, her interpretation of “No Surprises” is akin to a warm embrace, protective and comforting. Providing aural shelter from the storm, she strikes an apropos tone for a charity single. Hear here:
