Tracey Thorn covers Vampire Weekend

Shortly after Vampire Weekend released their latest album, Contra, Tracey Thorn took to Twitter and declared that track “Taxi Cab” was “absolutely GORGEOUS.”

I was similarly captivated by “Taxi Cab,” one of the standouts on Vampire Weekend’s excellent sophomore set. But Thorn, being an international recording artist and all — most famous as the female half of Everything But The Girl with partner Ben Watt — hopped into the studio shortly afterward to cover the song.

Thorn issued “Taxi Cab” as a B-side to a limited-edition 7″ of her new single, “Oh, The Divorces!”, and I thought I’d missed out since it was a Record Store Day exclusive in the UK, but she smartly thought to make it available as a digital download too. Thorn’s version is really very lovely, with the singer sitting so comfortably in the driver’s seat that you wouldn’t know that “Taxi Cab” began as someone else’s song. Take it for a ride:
