Under Her Command

Beyoncé has enjoyed solo success on such a stratospheric scale post-Destiny’s Child that it still amazes me that Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams haven’t gotten much love from the music-buying public.

Rowland’s biggest U.S. hit was as a featured vocalist on Nelly’s “Dilemma” way back in 2002, while Williams, who originally pursued a gospel path, found pop on 2008’s excellent Unexpected, only to have her conversion go mostly ignored.

Both ladies however have been warmly embraced by clubland, with remixes of their songs reaching the top of the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. Now Rowland follows up her 2009 turn at #1, “When Love Takes Over,” by again joining forces with French DJ David Guetta, whose beats seem to have brought out the singer’s more confident side. In the stomping “Commander,” Rowland delivers as the diva I want her to be, taking no prisoners on the dance floor and suffering no fools in the process. Hear here:

“Commander” is currently climbing the dance chart at #18, and Rowland expects her third LP will be out by the fall. If, like me, you’re anticipating her delayed date with destiny, check out a stream of another album track, “Shake Them Haters Off,” written by Ne-Yo and produced by Stargate.
