Ahead of the June 8th release of the soundtrack to Twilight: Eclipse, on which Metric has landed the lead-off track, the Canadian quartet is out with a video for “Stadium Love,” the closing song on their 2009 album, Fantasies.
I’d dialed up “Stadium Love,” a fave for its zooming kazoo-like chorus, on my iPod just the other day. Metric frontwoman Emily Haines says the best-played-loud song is about a “gladiator-style enormo-dome where everything turns in on itself, with every form of aggression on display for spectators.” Or, putting it more bluntly, “a fucked-up Noah’s Ark.”
The video’s more tame than that, with Metric performing “Stadium Love” inside a cage while a menagerie roams freely nearby. Sure, there’s clip after clip of Wild Kingdom-style animal attacks too, but as an antidote to that tension, the band members end up getting quite cozy with their big game companions.
PETA members can put the phone down. Metric ensured their animal co-stars were treated with love, respect and tenderness.
