Delayed ‘Happiness’

September 3, 2010 0 Comments

I’ve got to right a bit of a wrong here. I first heard Alexis Jordan‘s “Happiness” way back in April and was immediately smitten by this dance floor shaker fronted by a voice not unlike Leona Lewis’. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very “quick, quick, quick” to cover her tune here.

But the South Carolina native, who made it to the semi-finals during the first season of America’s Got Talent has done just fine without my help. After all, not only does the 18-year-old Jordan pack a ridiculous set of pipes, she’s signed to StarRoc, the Sony Music imprint that’s a joint venture between Jay-Z and Stargate. You might not know the Norwegian production duo by name, but you know the songs on which Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel Storleer Eriksen have worked their studio magic: Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable,” Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight,” and six hits from Rihanna, including “Don’t Stop The Music,” “Take A Bow,” “Rude Boy,” and her brand new insta-smash, “Only Girl (In The World).”

In July, Jordan took “Happiness” — which liberally samples Deadmau5’s “Berlin (2nd Edit)” — to the top the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. Of the three official remixes, my favorite is the first cut I came across, the Wideboys Club Mix. Hear here:

Jordan’s debut album is still in the works, so three mixes of “Happiness” are all we’ve got right now. Well, except for the videos she posts of her singing others’ songs, from Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and yep, Leona Lewis. (I told you the girl’s got some impressive pipes.)

As for Deadmau5, look for the mouse-headed DJ manning the turntables at tomorrow’s 2010 MTV Video Music Awards as the show’s official “House Artist.”
