Starsmith’s big ‘Break’

September 15, 2010 1 Comment

After remixing major tracks by the likes of Lady Gaga, Robyn, N.E.R.D. feat. Nelly Furtado, and Passion Pit, plus writing and producing songs for Ellie Goulding and Kylie Minogue, the multitalented Starsmith (aka Finlay Dow-Smith) is stepping out from behind the board. The 22-year-old electro-synth wizard, who quite rightly hails from pop-loving England and considers Frankmusik a friend and mentor, has just premiered a video for his proper debut single, “Give Me A Break.”

The total floor-filler lifts a liberal chunk of The Ritchie Family’s song of the same name, featured in the ill-timed disco stinker, Can’t Stop The Music, starring the Village People (and Bruce Jenner and Steve Guttenberg). The film famously bombed, but Starsmith’s new tune is the bomb (stop wincing, I’m embarrassed enough for myself).

Anyway, what Mr. Dow-Smith has done with the sample deserves your attention, and the video is pretty stellar too. Hear here:

While I’ve got my education, got determination, and got imagination — check, check, and check — unfortunately, iTunes doesn’t have Starsmith’s “Give Me A Break” yet. Soon, I hope.
