Still another week to wait before the release of Annie Lennox’s A Christmas Cornucopia, but today she premiered a music video for her recording of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”
I admit I’m a little surprised she chose to create a filmic adaptation of this traditional carol over “Universal Child,” the one original song on A Christmas Cornucopia, particularly since sales of that single benefit the singer’s charity foundation. But no matter; it’s always a treat to see Annie in action.
The art direction for “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” echoes the Victorian Era decorative touches found on the album’s cover. Hear’s a little of what Lennox told Spinner about the music video:
“It kind of brings you into almost a mythical kingdom. My references were to go back to Victorian times, which is a source of the way we celebrate Christmas now, with the cards, the Christmas tree and the presents. But I was also conscious about the Pagan idea, about marking the time of the end of the year. The trees go bare, we have the dark nights and the solstice.”
While you’ve no doubt heard “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” countless times before today, there’s really no voice quite like Lennox’s. Paired with the clip’s sepia-toned moving-postcard effect, the sum of those parts is certainly transfixing:
Annie Lennox – A Christmas Cornucopia is released November 16 via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
