Twin peeks

I think I’ve only ever watched maybe 10 minutes of Psych, but I’m super, er, psyched, for this Wednesday’s episode of the comedy/drama/mystery/procedural. It’s an homage to one of my favorite TV series of all time, Twin Peaks, a storyline created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the David Lynch/Mark Frost cult classic.

Co-written by Psych star James Roday, a fan of the influential ABC series that ran from 1990-1991, “Dual Spires” (see what they’ve done there?) features guest appearances from seven Twin Peaks cast members: Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee, Dana Ashbrook, Ray Wise, Robyn Lively, Lenny Von Dohlen and Catherine Coulson. (That’s right. The Log Lady returns as the “Woman with Wood.”) Julee Cruise, who sang on the original Twin Peaks soundtrack, even signed on to sing the Psych theme song.

Check out a preview of the supersized 49-minute-long “Dual Spires,” featuring Sherilyn Fenn, who played Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks. I’m not ashamed to admit I once carried quite the torch for the cherry-twisting temptress, and still have the supersized poster somewhere to prove it.

The “Dual Spires” episode of Psych airs Wednesday at 10/9c on USA.

And in a twist of perfect timing, Twin Peaks co-creator David Lynch has released his latest project, but you won’t find it showing on screens big or small.

After the writer/director provided visual accompaniment and a couple of vocals for Dark Night Of The Soul, the 2009 musical collaboration between Dangermouse and Sparklehorse, the always offbeat auteur, who’s long been involved in creating the music for his own films, has somehow still managed to produce something rather unexpected. Yesterday, the 64-year-old Lynch released “Good Day Today,” a dance single featuring his own electronically-altered voice.

Knowing its Lynchian origins, “Good Day Today” is surprisingly upbeat and catchy, with synths that sound, dare I say, very Twin Peaks-ish:

This new musical side of David Lynch brings Moby to mind, which is fitting, since the techno/electronica artist sampled “Laura Palmer’s Theme” for his 1991 hit, “Go.” The flip to “Good Day Today” is a dark bluesy slog titled “I Know,” a tune that’s definitely more in line with what you might expect from Lynch’s twisted mind (and not a Dionne Farris cover). The “Good Day Today”/”I Know” single is available for download now via iTunes, with a physical release coming in January. That edition will feature remixes of both tracks, plus artwork from the legendary Vaughan Oliver, famous for his imagery for 4AD artists like The Pixies, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, and Belly.
