Video Premiere

Adele’s china syndrome

The new album I’m most looking forward to hearing in 2011 is Adele’s 21. Her sophomore set is out in the UK on January 24, and reaches these shores a month later on February 22.

Adele premiered the lead single, “Rolling In The Deep,” in mid-November and performed it live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last Friday. Now my favorite British songstress has premiered a music video for this bluesy stomper, a visually striking clip set in a beautiful building that’s seen better days.

Adele sits alone in a room upstairs, while just outside, a hallway completely covered with water glasses begins to shake to the beat. In another room I assume is adjacent to hers, a musketeer makes a mess by cane dancing on a flour-filled floor (thank goodness someone had the foresight to protect the walls with plastic sheets). Down on the lower level, broken china piles at the bottom of the staircase as even more dishes are thrown against the wall (Xtina would approve). Nearby, Adele’s drummer appears to have been sent to time-out. Oh, and a model city burns.

But what does it all mean? Well, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” as the saying goes, and the lyrics to “Rolling In The Deep” seem borne from that notion (“Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship bare”). So the music video reads as a glimpse at Adele’s internal workings as she processes some big-time heartbreak. She may be sitting somewhat calmly as she sings, but just inside, some major shit is going down:

After doing her own tune on Ellen last Friday, Adele appeared on CMT’s Artists of the Year special, duetting on Lady Antebellum’s Grammy-nominated “Need You Now” with the gone-country Darius Rucker. Not unsurprisingly, Adele slayed it, but the tune could have done with a whole lot less Darius. CMT won’t let me embed the clip, so watch here.
