O Christmas Free: Röyksopp

December 11, 2010 0 Comments

Here’s one to file under ‘Least Likely, Yet Totally Real’: Röyksopp have turned their electronic talents toward a reimagining of “O Holy Night.” The Norwegian duo (and regular Robyn collaborators) have released the track as a free download via their website under the original French title, “Le Cantique de Noël.”

“Le Cantique de Noël” is cut from the same downtempo cloth Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland used to craft Senior, the introspective instrumental companion to 2009’s dance pop-centric Junior (on which Robyn guested). Röyksopp based their interpretation of the traditional Christmas hymn on an instrumental version played on harp, decorating it from there.

As Berge and Brundtland explain, “We went to a strange place with this one, fusing drums, choir and SFX together to create a version that perhaps is a bit like what a person in the early 1970’s could imagine Christmas music would sound like in the future. The future, like in 2010.” Hear here:
