For years, folks have joked that the only things left on Earth post-nuclear annihilation will be cockroaches and Cher.
Now thanks to the movie Burlesque, and songwriter Diane Warren, the 64-year-old singer-actress has a new theme song that speaks to the absolute truth in that jest, “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me.”
Over her 40-plus year career, Cher has shown a surprising staying power that her much younger peers can only ever dream of attaining. Though she’s had her share of ups and downs, her inexplicable immunity to the shifting whims of the entertainment world has confounded Cher’s most vocal critics while also earning their admiration. Whatever you call it — self-awareness, determination, sheer stubbornness — she’s got it in spades: Knocked down and counted out, you can bet that eventually Cher will get right back up and at it.
And that’s the genius of “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me,” in which Warren’s words serve the story of the club owner Cher plays in Burlesque, while simulatenously holding a mirror to the singer’s own reality. Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song (alongside one sung by co-star Christina Aguilera), Cher’s tune is enjoying a run in the clubs, where the self-empowerment anthem has been remixed by Dave Audé, Almighty, Stonebridge, and Johnny Vicious.
This week, “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” sits at #3 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart, Cher’s first appearance on the tally in seven years. Between 1999 and 2003, she notched six club #1s, and her latest entry could be lucky number seven. I like what Johnny Vicious has done with “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me,” but his mixes don’t seem to be commercially available. The Dave Audé rework is the best of the rest:
