Sia’s still here

Well, Sia didn’t win a Golden Globe on Sunday night for “Bound To You,” the song she co-wrote with Christina Aguilera and her bassist Sam Dixon for Burlesque. The trophy instead went to another tune from the film, “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me,” written by Diane Warren and sung by Cher (a perennial Golden Globe fave, so not a total surprise, really).

Though a potential Oscar nomination is still in the offing, Sia must have expected a much different 2010 than the one she had. In June, the Australian singer-songwriter released her fifth studio album, We Are Born, but immediately had to suspend promotional efforts as she dealt with health issues related to Graves’ disease. Sia and Dixon also collaborated with Aguilera on four songs for the platnium blonde’s Bionic, but Xtina’s otherwise sexed-up robopop album bombed.

Unexpected and undeserved as both of those situations were, Sia must still beyond proud of last year’s output, which also included landing a song on the Twilight: Eclipse soundtrack (“My Love”) and guesting on David Byrne’s Here Lies Love project (“Never So Big”). I follow her on Twitter (@siamusic) and she strikes me as the sort of woman who takes life in stride, whatever comes her way. Sia did, in fact, receive accolades from her home country in November for We Are Born, winning three of out five ARIAs (the Australian equivalent of the Grammys) for which her music was nominated. She remarked at the time that she’s feeling better thanks to months of rest and hormone-replacement therapy.

And Sia hasn’t closed the door on a resurrection of We Are Born in the U.S., premiering a music video for “I’m In Here,” the album’s most introspective track. Since it’s not all Ke$ha flash and Britney bang, the song might have missed your radar. Reminiscent in some respects to “Breathe Me,” her breakthrough song from the Six Feet Under finale, seeing “I’m In Here” paired with the eerie/calm unpiloted-plane-ride-of-a-clip below, it makes me think Lost missed an opportunity for an even more emotionally rewarding closer:

Perhaps inspired by the music video for “I’m In Here” (or freaked out by its empty cockpit), Sia is learning to fly. Yes, really.

Sia’s also featured on VH1’s “You Oughta Know” this month. Though she’s been an “artist on the rise” for quite some time, I sure do hope more look up and take notice of Sia in 2011.
