Nearly 25 years have passed since Nu Shooz made their chart debut in 1986 with “I Can’t Wait.” The husband-and-wife duo from Portland, Oregon made a big splash with the song, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Play chart, #2 R&B, and #3 on the Hot 100.
Now a new tune is wearing Nu Shooz. “Buzzin’,” the latest single from upstart L.A. rapper Mann, samples “I Can’t Wait” to great effect. Produced by J.R. Rotem, who’s crafted #1 hits for Rihanna (“S.O.S.”) and Jason DeRulo (“Whatcha Say”) by seamlessly integrating older material with new, has done it again here. Beyond the oh-so-’80s Nu Shooz sample, which makes up the bulk of “Buzzin’,” there are obvious ’90s hip-hop influences to boot. Incorporating thick Bad Boy beat-scratching and a wandering Dr. Dre-like synth line, maybe Mann’s “Buzzin'” represents the long overdue East Coast Rap vs. West Coast Rap détente.
“Buzzin'” just entered the Hot 100 at #95, Mann’s first single to do so (the quick guest verse from 50 Cent might have done the trick). While there’s much to like about the hip-pop “Buzzin,” the music video relies on rap tropes of flashy cars, suggestively-clad ladies (a peek of which appears below), and flying cash. Talk about a throwback:
