Video Premiere

These birds have flown

Anyone else find it ironic that some of the most interesting music videos are being made today, with artists of all stripes sticking by the format, yet these works are rarely screened on television?

Yes, I know that the “M” in MTV was rendered meaningless years ago — hey, maybe that’s what it stands for now! — but even Fuse, once touted as the savior of the all-music format, instead airs a mix of live performances, specials, and documentaries over extended blocks of music videos. But with iPhones and iPads in hand, Facebook and Twitter feeds to check, and countless other technological distractions thanks to pervasive 3G and Wi-Fi, we probably couldn’t be bothered to sit and watch music videos for a stretch anyway. Instead, it’s mostly an a la carte experience online, happening upon a worthy new clip via websites or blogs like this one (accessed via iPhones, iPads, Facebook, and Twitter).

Such as it is, please give a few minutes of your time to watch this new music video from DeVotchKa. “100 Other Lovers,” the first single from the Denver multi-instrumentalists’ new album, 100 Lovers, is a wonderful stop-motion animation piece with a faded, old-world feel. DeVotchka’s new album, 100 Lovers, the quartet’s first in two years, is out March 1.
