R.E.M. has debuted three more entries from its Collapse Into Now Film Project, in which different filmmakers interpret songs from the band’s new studio album, released on Tuesday.
Directed by Lance Bangs, who helmed New Adventures In Hi-Fi clips, “How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us” and “New Test Leper,” “Alligator_Aviator_Autopilot_Antimatter” stars Michael Stipe and gender-role provocateur Peaches, who sings backup on the track. Both are clad in crazy costumes that appear to have been ransacked from Lady Gaga’s crazy closet, with Stipe’s outfits much more over the top.
Over on Dazed Digital, Stipe shared Sophie Calle‘s clip for “Walk It Back.” If the song brought to mind scenes of dancing in a parking garage, a fly on a menu, and a horse taking a (very long) piss, well you and the French artist think freakishly alike, apparently. I agree with Stipe’s earlier assesment that these aren’t music videos, but “Walk It Back” isn’t much of a film either.
In conjunction with the release of Collapse Into Now, “Oh My Heart,” directed by Jem Cohen, premiered Tuesday on IFC.com. Cohen, a longtime R.E.M. associate who lensed the band’s videos for “Talk About the Passion,” “Country Feedback” and “Nightswimming,” sets his sights upon the streets of Vienna, Austria, though the elegaic “Oh My Heart” is all about New Orleans. At least there are no horses.
Six films down, six films to yet be screened from the Collapse Into Now project. Stay tuned to R.E.M.’s website for details of their unspooling.
