Solange Goes With The Flow

March 15, 2011 1 Comment

Years from now, when this period of modern music is given a close examination, I think any scholar worth his or her salt will conclude that, of the two singing Knowles siblings, Solange was far more interesting than big sis Beyoncé. Actually, why wait? I can assert that with confidence right now.

Solange may not have a wind-machine tracking her every move on stage, but seems to take pleasure in pursuing wherever the breeze may blow, always broaden her sonic horizons. Her criminally overlooked 2009 sophomore set, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, was steeped in organic Motown-era sounds, but also sampled Scottish ambient duo Boards Of Canada. That same year she covered Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is The Move,” and Björk’s “It’s Oh So Quiet.” Last fall, Solange contributed to a track by Of Montreal (“Sex Karma”) and can currently be heard on Theophilus London’s new EP (“Flying Overseas”). The younger Knowles girl gets around.

It can be argued that Solange enjoys this musical freedom precisely because she hasn’t achieved superstar status (not having a record contract also helps), but if she was consumed by its pursuit and wanted more than anything to grab that brass ring, I doubt she’d have such an adventurous resume.

Taking a break from recording her third album, Solange keeps her left-field interests alive, teaming up with Brooklynites Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear, CANT) and George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) to record a charity single. The trio’s “Kenya” will raise money for The Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) founded by The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, providing clean water and sanitation resources where they’re needed most. Learn more about the effort here, and listen to “Kenya” via the Natalie Johns-directed clip below:
