Track of the Moment

Carpe percussion

I don’t know if it’s because of my childhood desire to be a drummer (a dream indefinitely deferred), but I’ve long been drawn to percussive pop. Whether Paul Simon’s “The Obvious Child,” Simply Red’s “Fairground,” the opening one-two punch of Pet Shop Boys’ Bilingual, or more current examples, like Mos Def’s “Quiet Dog” and Lykke Li’s “Get Some,” drums and sticks and other things being hit elicits an unshakable attraction from deep within.

The latest one pumping up my playlist is “Live Those Days Tonight,” the new single from Friendly Fires that previews the dance-rockers’ sophomore album, Pala, out May 24. Produced once again by Paul Epworth (“Jump In The Pool,” “Kiss Of Life”), there are moments when things settle down during the densely packed “Live Those Days Tonight,” but these brief pauses only amplify the louder parts that much more.

Even if you’re not typically drawn to such percussive sounds, it’s hard to resist heeding lead singer Ed MacFarlane’s carpe diem call to “Live Those Days Tonight”:
