“What is it that you want?” is the question posed by Norwegian trio Blackroom on their new single, the first music released by the band since their 2009 Japan-only album, Pop Noir. To these boys once known as Lorraine, I respond without a moment’s hesitation, “More, please.”
The dense electropop of “What Is It That You Want” suggests the darker side of Depeche Mode, even as Blackroom vocalist Ole Gundersen asks that we “teleport to happiness.” (Tell me which genre employs that push-pull better than pop music.) Compared to Dave Gahan’s sinister baritone, however, Gundersen’s tenor is practically smiley-faced.
This club-ready first single has me very much looking forward to the arrival of Blackroom’s full-length. Stay tuned.
