Get acquainted with Kay

April 4, 2011 0 Comments

Have you gotten acquainted with Kay yet? Born and raised in Nova Scotia, the Canadian singer-songwriter migrated to L.A., and now her fresh mix of hip-hop, pop, and electro is grabbing lots of ears.

Crafted in conjunction with hitmakers Ryan Tedder and Evan “The Kidd” Bogart, first single “My Name Is Kay” is a perfect pick for Kay’s coming-out party, showcasing her twin talents as a vocalist and female MC. With the opening beat of “Be My Baby” pounded out on piano and some Sly & The Family Stone bass, also going for a spin in Kay’s musical blender are The Ting Tings’ “That’s Not My Name,” Imani Coppola’s “Legend Of A Cowgirl,” and Robyn’s “Konichiwa Bitches.”

That’s some none-too-shabby inspiration, to be sure. But what really makes “My Name Is Kay” so super-catchy is that this “chick” has got personality in spades. Bonus points for filming the video in my former home of Chicago — I know those streets well!
