“Together,” the sole new track to appear on last year’s Ultimate Pet Shop Boys compilation, has finally made its way to the U.S. today via Astralwerks.
Spread out across four separate releases, there are five mixes of “Together” to collect (Radio Mix, Ultimate, Extended, Pepptalk, Ultrabeat), plus Grum’s remix of “West End Girls” (the tune that started all this Pet Shop Boys business in the first place) and studio covers of The Dave Clark Five (“Glad All Over”) and the late Kate McGarrigle (“I Cried For Us”).
The “Together” music video was shot in Estonia with director Peeter Rebane. The dance-centric piece showcases a variety of styles, including Russian Cossack, waltz, ballet, and breakdancing, though Neil and Chris wisely leave all the moving around to much younger folks to execute. My favorite moment comes near the end when they’re shown beaming in the wings together like a pair of proud parents.
Still no word on when Ultimate Pet Shop Boys will hit these shores. The deluxe edition released overseas includes a DVD of the duo’s BBC performances from the past 25 years.
Pet Shop Boys have been tapped to serve as “very special guests” on Take That’s upcoming Progress Live 2011 Tour that kicks off at the end of next month. Odd to think of them as an opening act, but even limited to a 40-minute set, I bet the Pets will put on the more entertaining show.
