Bass Drum of Death covers The Chiffons

Last week, Oxford, Missisippi duo Bass Drum of Death released their debut album, GB City.

Like so many garage rockers before him, John Barrett — who recorded all of GB City himself and then recruited Colin Sneed as his touring drummer — has a soft-spot for ’60s girl groups. The iTunes version of the album has as its bonus track a blown-out cover of The Chiffons’ 1963 #1 hit, “He’s So Fine” (a song later made even more famous via a successful plagiarism lawsuit against George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord”).

Having served up kudos to Samantha Fox on Friday for recording the Beatles’ “I Should Have Known Better” without changing any of the song’s gender references, in turn I must give props to Barrett for keeping all bits intact for his cover of “He’s So Fine.”

Dude-lang, dude-lang, dude-lang...”

Saying one of the reasons he started Bass Drum of Death was “so girls would talk to me,” Barrett may be straight but he’s so not narrow. Not only has Bass Drum of Death opened for JD Samson’s new gender-bending band, MEN, he also sat down for an extended interview with OUT magazine.
