Morrissey covers “Moon River”

Last week, a new Morrissey compilation hit the streets in the UK. With several hits collections already in his discography, it’s been greeted with chatter that the Very Best of Morrissey title is a loose interpretation as it’s not very comprehensive, instead concentrating on a chunk of the singer’s ’90s output. But Morrissey’s recorded for several labels over his career, complicating licensing matters more than a little.

Very Best of Morrissey does sport one unreleased track, a solo version of 1994’s “Interlude” sans Siouxsie Sioux, with whom he originally dueted, plus some new-to-DVD videos. And in keeping with the tradition of Morrissey’s other best-ofs, several B-sides take up residence alongside their A-side brethren.

One of those B-sides, Morrissey’s recording of “Moon River,” the theme song from the 1961 film, Breakfast At Tiffany’s, first appeared on his 1994 single, “Now My Heart Is Full.” Often covered in concert, “Moon River” made the cut for the following year’s World Of Morrissey compilation, and is now picked again for this latest round-up.

Morrissey makes Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini’s Oscar- and Grammy-winning tune a nearly 10-minute opus, setting off for a languid ride upon “Moon River.” This contemplative mood is somewhat jarred midway through by the inclusion of Audrey Hepburn’s tearful breakdown from the film (which celebrates its 50th anniversary later this year). Hepburn’s Holly Golightly can also be heard at the end, asking, “What are you going to do?”

Morrissey – “Moon River”

If Morrissey’s version of “Moon River” isn’t quite it for you, this recording captured from a broken-down carousel calliope carries a certain warped charm.
