Today, after a bit of teasing, Coldplay premiered a new tune, “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall,” a taste of their still-untitled, still-without-release-date fifth studio album, which like their last, 2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, will feature production by Brian Eno. “We’re about to play a bunch of summer festivals so it’s as good a time as any to put out a new song,” the band remarks on its website.
“Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” shows Coldplay is still in its shooting-for-the-stars, arena-rock phase — the title alone tips that hat without having to hear a single note — and though their aim somehow makes the band an all-too-easy target for critics and bloggers to knock about, I’m relishing every single soaring note (even as the song incorporates elements of Peter Allen’s “I Go To Rio”).
How can one turn their nose down to the universal feeling imbued in the opening line of “Every Teardrop”? “I turn the music up, I got my records on / I shut the world outside until the lights come on.” Amazing.
