If you’ve been listening to music being released lately, you might have picked up on that Prince is having a moment. So many artists now are referencing grooves, drum patterns, and guitars plucked from his ’80s discography (his best and most memorable work) that His Royal Badness might want a cut of the royalties. You don’t even have to be very good at math to know that Beyonce’s “1+1” wouldn’t add up to much without Prince’s “Purple Rain” in the equation.
Continuing the trend, Hologram Heart Parade brings some major Purple One funk and falsetto to its debut release, “Dirty Heart.” To be fair, the upstart Manchester, UK quintet (two women, three men) says they also hold up Sparks, Tom Tom Club, Grace Jones, Roxy Music, and the Pointer Sisters(!) as musical heroes. Flirtation with a few of those other loves can be heard on “Dirty Heart,” but Prince is most definitely at the head of this tune.
At an extended six minutes long, “Dirty Heart” is already fit for a 12″, a format Prince once regularly used to get funkier on record. Giving their new groove room to move is one more way that Hologram Heart Parade genuflects in his direction.
