I’m so not one to refuse some new Robyn in my life, even if the latest model simply recycles a bit of vintage tuneage from my fave Swede.
Thus we have rising Baltimore rapper Rye Rye‘s “Never Will Be Mine,” whose rapid-fire flow pauses for a generous sampling of “Be Mine,” a heartbreak beat (surprise!) from Robyn’s eponymous 2005 album.
“Never Will Be Mine” is the second single from Rye Rye’s years-in-the-making debut album, Go! Pop! Bang!, to be released on June 14. The first, “Sunshine,”, came out last fall and featured M.I.A., Rye Rye’s label boss and executive producer. It was one of my Top Tracks of 2010.
Slight disappointment alert: “Never Will Be Mine” doesn’t include Robyn’s scarf-and-shoelaces bridge from “Be Mine.” Maybe Rye Rye’s saving that memorable bit for the remix.
Purchase Rye Rye featuring Robyn – “Never Will Be Mine” via iTunes, Amazon MP3.
