Whoever originally said, “It’s the journey, not the destination,” certainly never had to deal with the hassles of modern air travel.
The in-flight indignities suffered by travelers taking a ride to another clime are illustrated quite realistically in Friendly Fires‘ new video for “Hawaiian Air,” the second single from the trio’s superb sophomore album, Pala.
Before touching down in the Aloha State, Friendly Fires’ frontman Ed Macfarlane finds himself subjected to seat mates crowding his personal space (crosstalk, sleeping on his shoulder, disgustingly devouring food), incessantly bothered by undisciplined children, subjected to awful films aimed at said kids (“with a talking dog”), feeling knees in his back, turbulence, etc.
Many of us have been there, hoping that whatever relaxation awaits us on the other side had better be worth all the hassle (not forgetting security and baggage claim). So cheers to Macfarlane’s sanity-saving move: a gin and tonic. Of course, being from the UK, he’s still got to get through customs before soaking in the sun and surf. Best to make it a double, and keep ’em coming.
