In perhaps what is the most unsurprising cover news of recent vintage, Weezer has recorded The Cars’ 1984 single “You Might Think” for Cars 2, the new sequel to the 2006 Pixar/Disney film that introduced us to a colorful universe of talking four-wheeled vehicles.

But not only was a song originally by The Cars newly recorded for a movie called Cars (well, Cars 2), the pioneering synthpop band’s frontman, Ric Ocasek, produced Weezer’s eponymous 1994 debut (aka The Blue Album), featuring “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly,” and “Say It Ain’t So.”

It’s not exactly the snake eating its tail, but I think it’s fair to say there’s some intimate familiarity at play. Weezer hews closely to the original Heartbeat City classic, pointing it foward and keeping it between the lines. Weezer’s faithful cover of “You Might Think” might be the sonic equivalent of borrowing your dad’s ride, but for a generation or two (or three?) that might not be familiar with The Cars’ original model, it’s worth taking out for a spin.

Cars 2 opens Friday. In addition to Weezer’s cover of “You Might Think,” the soundtrack also features a duet with Robbie Williams and Brad Paisley, appropriately titled, “Colllision Of Worlds.”

The Cars, as you may have heard, released Move Like This last month, their first studio album in 24 years. The sleek set of new tunes doesn’t tarnish the band’s New Wave legacy in the least.
