Dionne Bromfield gets it ‘Right’

Sometimes the wait between a song’s premiere and its release is so long that I miss its arrival entirely.

“Yeah Right” comes from 15-year-old British soul singer Dionne Bromfield, Amy Winehouse’s goddaughter and the first signing to the still-troubled singer‘s Lionness Records label. Originally released in the UK in February, the song made the trip to the U.S. in early May (though I only noticed it on iTunes over the weekend). “Yeah Right” is the first taste of Bromfield’s forthcoming sophomore album, Good For The Soul.

Her 2009 debut, Introducing Dionne Bromfield, released when she was just 13, was an all-covers affair of ’60s classics by The Exciters, The Shirelles, The Chiffons, The Marvelettes, and more. Good For The Soul focuses on original material while retaining the ’60s pop bent. Like godmother like goddaughter, I guess, though you won’t hear me complaining, since what Bromfield brings to the table is very much in my wheelhouse. Her new album was recorded in part with Steve Booker, who helped infuse Duffy’s debut with the decade’s sounds.

Bromfield co-wrote all but three of the songs on Good For The Soul, including “Yeah Right,” one of a trio penned with Eg White. White’s long list of credits includes Adele (“Chasing Pavements,” “Take It All”), Charlotte Church (“Call My Name”), and Duffy (“Warwick Avenue”), as well as Florence + The Machine, Kris Allen, and James Blunt.

The UK version of “Yeah Right” features a rap by Diggy Simmons (Rev Run’s son), who also appears in the video below. Diggy’s been stripped from the U.S. single release, so you’ll have to imagine the tune below without him. I’m definitely buying one ticket to Bromfield’s solo show.

In the UK, Bromfield’s already onto her second single, “Foolin'” (originally called “Muggin'”), another Eg White co-write. Good For The Soul is set for a UK release on July 4. Listen to an album sampler here.
