Video Premiere

Turn on the ‘Heart’ Lights

Hologram Heart Parade‘s “Dirty Heart” has insinuated itself deep into my cerebral cortex, which has been cueing up the Manchester band’s slinky Prince-like funk often since the single debuted a couple of weeks ago.

Now Hologram Heart Parade has served up a music video for “Dirty Heart” that will likely attach itself to my senses too. It’s not the sort of video you’d typically expect from a group so new to the scene, with only the quintet’s vocalist, Pauline Johnston, seen in the clip, directed by visual artist Elisa Artesero.

“I used some of my ‘Creeping Light’ film work as the backdrop to the video with Pauline as a central, almost sculptural piece, moving slowly as she sings,” explains Artesero. “Pauline performed brilliantly in keeping her movements slow and deliberate. She has a strong on-screen presence which meant that the edit could be kept simple and understated, the focus and interest kept on the ‘Creeping Light’ and Pauline.”

The net effect is an unusual, mesmerizing music video for “Dirty Heart.” The fact that it holds your attention for the song’s 6-minute duration is a testament to this unique collaboration, and a good indication that we shouldn’t expect the same old, same old as Hologram Heart Parade marches forward.

A few days ago, Hologram Heart Parade also posted an acoustic performance of a new song on its way, “Without Me,” which is worth a listen.
