Having launched her career in 1978 with the disco smash, “Shame,” the legendary Evelyn “Champagne” King is poised to dazzle dancefloors three decades later as the featured vocalist on “Everybody,” the latest single from San Francisco DJ/producer Miguel Migs.
“Everybody” is the first taste of Migs’ forthcoming album, Outside The Skyline, an artist-focused set that also sports guest vocals from bossa-nova beauty Bebel Gilberto and the multi-talented Meshell Ndegeocello, among others.
A sultry disco ditty fit for an artist of Evelyn “Champagne” King’s stature, the original version of “Everybody” enjoys a brief dip into deep house at the 3:00 mark before returning King to more familiar territory. The remixes, including Migs’ own Deep Salted Dub, serve up variations on tempo and style, offering something for, um, everybody. Hear here:
Following the terrible news of Amy Winehouse’s death and the heart-wrenching details of the attacks in Oslo, Norway, I didn’t feel much like delving into dance music tonight. But just hearing King singing under the disco lights again provides something of a salve to the not-so-good, a reminder that music often serves as shelter, solace, and escape in such moments.
