Technically, this isn’t a flashback since it took place just a couple of days ago, but it does feature two pop artists from the ’80s that any examination of the decade (close or cursory) can’t overlook.
On Wednesday, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson popped over to ABC’s The View to promote their joint tour. Their sit-down chat with the hosts was a hoot, once again laying to rest any rumors of rivalry, but it was the live performance that followed that proved the real revelation.
With microphones in hand and backed by an acoustic band, the pair of former ’80s teen queens totally surpassed expectations. Tiffany kicked things off with her new country-fied version of “I Think We’re Alone Now,” the cover song that started it all. If there were any naysayers still holding onto the notion that she was always the less-talented of the two, Tiffany showed she’s got real vocal chops, absolutely slaying the tune.
Joined on stage by Gibson, the duo then took on “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves,” the Eurythmics’ 1985 hit featuring Aretha Franklin. Doing the female-empowerment anthem proud, their performance left me wishing that their “Journey Through The ’80s” tour was heading out west. Come on, girls, keep a good thing going!
