With a title like “Vomit,” it was with some trepidation that I approached the latest from Girls when the San Francisco indie rockers offered it as a free download a couple of weeks ago. But clicking play and sticking with the six-minute track turned out to be one of the better decisions I’ve made in recent days.

Taken from Girls’ forthcoming sophomore album, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, “Vomit” is a meditative opus with prominent acoustic guitar and some Hammond organ. The meandering track is by turns haunting, desolate, and heavy, but ultimately, a rewarding listen. The veil of abject loneliness that hangs over much of the song begins to lift around the 3:45 mark, when the clouds first part. A sliver of sun peeks through, soon ushering in an unexpected and wholly satisfying gospel finish.

Yesterday, Girls premiered a music video for “Vomit,” directed by Austin Rhodes and based on an idea from frontman Chris Owens. The camera is largely trained on the cherry red 1966 Ford Mustang convertible that Owens drives as he travels the streets of San Francisco late at night, looking for love. That description reads like a simple enough execution, but the visuals (and some ace editing) render the feel of “Vomit” wonderfully.

Father, Son, Holy Ghost appears September 13 on True Panther.
