I first encountered GusGus during the trip-hop heyday of the mid-’90s, of which I was a massive fan, but the Icelandic collective’s music never quite stuck with me. Back then, I’d buy a CD or maxi-single, only to sell it back later. (Remember those days?)
But after more than 15 years together, with several lineup shifts in the band’s history, I’m absolutely loving GusGus’ “Over.” The track appears on their eighth studio album, Arabian Horse, released in May. “Over” arrives at exactly the right time, dovetailing nicely with my renewed interest in house music, especially variations of modern vintage (see Hercules And Love Affair, The Rapture).
“‘Over’ is a complex psychological study of a situation where things have gone out of hand in a long term relationship with trust issues, which occurs over and over and seem impossible to mend,” says GusGus singer/frontman Daniel Ágúst Haraldsson. “Wishful thinking and desperate hope of a make-over are prominent in the conclusion of this song, with a sour taste of this repetitive pattern of trust breaking and an ongoing dilemma of people not being able to stick to each other. Is it over or can we re-install the game over?”
Heady stuff, no? I guess Haraldsson’s description officially classifies “Over” as deep house. Featuring fantastic female counterpoint vocals courtesy of Urður “Earth” Hákonardóttir, I find myself listening to “Over” over and over and over…
GusGus’ captivating video for “Over” premiered earlier this month:
