Nashville trio BASECAMP has covered Ace Of Base’s “All That She Wants,” replacing the reggae-pop of the Swedish group’s debut single with spare indie R&B. The ’90s classic has been a staple of BASECAMP’s live sets.
Though it’s been 20 years since “All That She Wants” reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, I’m still not sure whether “another baby” refers to a woman’s thirst for conquest after conquest or her desire to birth a child. The first can result in the second, of course.
Setting their cover to a funereal march with woozy late-night vibes, BASECAMP makes the warning at the heart of the song (“She’s going to get you, boy”) more resonant for those still looking when last-call comes around.
Maybe Aaron Miller, Aaron C. Harmon, and Jordan Reyes should consider “All That She Wants” the start of an ‘Ace Of BASECAMP’ project, taking on more selections from the Swedes’ catalog. I’m putting in a request now for “Lucky Love” and “Everytime It Rains.”
