Earlier this year, Field Music covered “Heart” and “Rent” from Pet Shop Boys‘ 1987 album, Actually. Now former Propaganda frontwoman Claudia Brücken has pulled a third song from that same chapter of the Tennant-Lowe songbook, tackling “King’s Cross” for her new covers album, The Lost Are Found. The set also features songs by David Bowie, The Band, Bee Gees, Julee Cruise, Dubstar, Electric Light Orchestra, Lilac Time, and Stina Nordenstam.
Because Pet Shop Boys covers are amazingly so few and far between, you might recall that “King’s Cross” was previously covered by Tracey Thorn for her 2007 album, Out Of The Woods. Released as a single, Thorn’s recording was remixed by Hot Chip. But while Brücken isn’t the first to revisit “King’s Cross,” she earns bonus cool points for having the song’s original producer, Stephen Hague, behind the board for her new take.
Twenty-five years separate the two productions, and though they share a similar feel at the outset, Hague gets to work building something much bigger for Brücken. He projects “King’s Cross” onto a Spectorian Wall of Sound, incorporating a “Be My Baby” drum beat and unleashing some wild horns at the song’s close.
