DWNTWN covers Bruce Springsteen

Posting about DWNTWN‘s song “Hungry Hearts” last autumn, I suggested that the Los Angeles synthpop duo might have something in common with Bruce Springsteen beyond having similarly titled tunes.

While “Hungry Hearts” wasn’t a twist on The Boss’ 1980 classic, now Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda have indeed set their sights on Springsteen, covering “I’m On Fire,” a #6 hit from his massive Born In The U.S.A. album.

Back in 1984, I was no fan of “I’m On Fire.” But I came around sometime in college, an awakening credited to an excellent in-concert cover by Tori Amos. Almost two decades later, DWNTWN’s delicate take is a keeper too.

Leffler and Cepeda recorded “I’m On Fire” on a rare rainy day in Los Angeles. Finishing the session in an hour (“We wanted that raw sort of sound”), the duo hopped in a car to film a video to accompany their cover.
