Echoes have covered The Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday” for a new charity EP celebrating the made-for-TV band. Proceeds from Post Fab Four: A Tribute To The Monkees benefit the Davy Jones Equine Memorial Foundation, which cares for the herd of horses left behind by the late Monkees member, who died in February 2012.

TheMonkeesPleasantValleySundayWritten by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, “Pleasant Valley Sunday” was recorded and released by The Monkees in the summer of 1967. The song, a commentary on suburban life and consumerism, peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I reached out to Echoes’ Dave Fawbert to inquire as to why he and musical partner Jon Beck selected this particular track to cover.

“It’s such a well-written song, and has such strange chords. It doesn’t go where you expect it to,” Fawbert tells Popservations. “We wanted to slow down the original, put it into our sound and expose what a great song it is. The lyrics are brilliant too — as relevant today as ever.”

Applying a synthpop makeover to The Monkees’ hit, Echoes’ cover of “Pleasant Valley Sunday” parades through the intersection of Pet Shop Boys and The Orb.

In addition to Echoes’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday” update, Post Fab Four: A Tribute To The Monkees features contributions from B.E.F (“A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You”), Mekon (“Mary Mary”), and Killaflaw (“Randy Scouse Git”).

As for Echoes’ own music, Fawbert says they plan to release their first “proper” single this autumn via Wall Of Sound.
