Last week, Ellie Goulding released Halcyon Days, an expanded reissue of her sophomore album released last year. Of the eight newly appended tracks, one is a cover of The Waterboys’ “How Long Will I Love You.”
While the Scottish band’s 1990 original recording had a brisk, rock-and-roll beat — plus a sax! — Goulding treats “How Long Will I Love You” as a tender ballad. Why the dramatic shift? All the better to soundtrack About Time, the latest romantic comedy from Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Notting Hill).
To promote Goulding’s cover and the upcoming film, a video cobbles together scenes from About Time and memorable moments from Curtis’ previous cinematic achievements of a similar stripe. It’s all quite lovely, actually.
About Time opens in the UK on September 4, while U.S. audiences must wait until November 1.
