Taking a break from generating their own grooves recently, French Horn Rebellion was looking for songs to “funkify” as a free download. Turning to their fans for suggestions, the Brooklyn dance duo ultimately landed upon The Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me.”
If Robert and David Perlick-Molinari’s choice has you wondering if things are going to get awkward — thematically speaking, “Don’t You Want Me” would make a skeevy duet for siblings — David’s wife, Deidre Muro, of Deidre & The Dark and Savoir Adore steps in to play Susan Ann Sulley to his Philip Oakey, while Robert occupies himself with his instrument (the French horn, of course). The result is good, clean (and yes, funkified) fun.
That is until, like me, you notice certain lyrics for the first time. “Don’t forget it’s me who put you where you are now, I can put you back down too” is an impressively dark threat for what was a big, fluffy pop hit in 1982. Let’s just gloss over that, and wish all the best to David and Deidre!
If you want more, French Horn Rebellion promise a French-horn only version and other surprises soon.
