Friends cover Ghost Town DJ’s

I don’t recall having any particular affection toward Ghost Town DJ’s’ “My Boo,” but it could be that Chicago (my home at the time) didn’t have as much love for the Miami bass track as, say, Miami, where the song was a certified smash.

Nationwide, Ghost Town DJ’s summoned only enough love for “My Boo” to finish at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1996. “I Love You Always Forever” by Donna Lewis, “You’re Makin’ Me High” by Toni Braxton, and “C’mon ‘N Ride It (The Train)” from another group with DJ’s in its name — Quad City DJ’s — were among the other singles that enjoyed wider appeal. (Oh, and let’s not forget Los Del Rio, who got all of America to learn the “Macarena” steps, spending 14 weeks at #1.)

But while “My Boo” may have been something of a regional smash, a one-hit wonder left to dusty pop history, upstart Bushwick, Brooklyn band Friends have covered it as the b-side to their upcoming single, “I’m His Girl.” The quartet’s allegiance to music that gets folks moving is documented in their own tunes, so while Friends’ re-do isn’t drastically different from Ghost Town DJ’s’ original, the percussive touches and dreamy female vocals make this new translation a real keeper.

Better still (or frustratingly so), I’m left to wonder what other songs I may have missed in the first place. Hear here:
