George Michael covers Stevie Wonder

Earlier this week, George Michael decided to cover a song as a wedding present to Prince William and Kate Middleton, soliciting suggestions via Twitter:

He then teased followers with additional hints. The song was never a single, George said, and was “written in the Seventies by a genius.” The first word of the title was “You.” Still keeping the selection close to his chest, he said a mutual friend ran the selection by William and Kate personally, who said they liked the song. George was positively ecstatic: “The only green light I cared about! Hooray!!”

Today, after a brief publishing hiccup, George revealed that Stevie Wonder had given clearance to the recording. So just the slightest bit of sleuthing revealed the cover in question was “You and I (We Can Conquer The World)” from 1972’s Talking Book, an album that includes a much more famous “You” song, “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life.”

With the royal wedding just two weeks away, George appeared on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight to unveil his charity present to William and Kate. “When I was a child, I dreamt of singing this song. In my imagination, my idea of fame at the time was the school assembly hall,” he told Morgan. “I was about 12, and I had this record, this Stevie Wonder song. I used to dream of singing it in the school assembly hall, but I guess this is a slightly bigger deal than that.”
