John Legend isn’t just the latest artist to give Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” a go, the R&B singer’s new acapella cover makes the short list of those who’ve done the song justice.

Legend’s stripped-down version further reveals the gospel roots at the heart of “Rolling In The Deep,” and I’ll add my voice to the chorus applauding his cover. But Adele’s original recording is simply untouchable. Because she lived the song’s story (and lived to sing about it), there’s no topping her personal connection that’s inextricably entangled in her every breath, moan, and wail.

Adele’s sophomore album, 21, is back on top of the Billboard albums chart for a third non-consecutive week, having sold another 98,000 copies. In the UK, 21 has held onto the #1 spot for seven weeks running, and has already gone multi-platinum there.
