Stretching back a bit to 2006, here’s a light little somethin’ for a Sunday morning.
Folk-rocker Joshua Radin closed out his debut album, We Were Here, with a cover of Yaz’s debut single from 1982, “Only You.” Actually, the Shaker Heights, Ohio native appended two versions. First, there’s Radin’s studio recording, which is followed by a remix with additional electronic adornment courtesy of Imogen Heap.
While the former is a refreshingly organic take on Yaz’s synth-constructed original, I’m drawn to the remix. Heap’s music-box twinkling and shuffling beats are a nice nod to what Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke first put to tape, yet still sound fresh and (most importantly) mesh nicely with Radin’s hushed Elliot Smith-like vocals.
