It’s become something of a trend for pop/rock artists to re-record their hits as country duets.
Lionel Richie partnered up with a stable full of stars (including Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts, Jennifer Nettles) on last year’s Tuskegee, and going country went platinum. This spring, John Fogerty revisits his Creedence Clearwater Revival catalogue for Wrote A Song For Everyone, lassoing the likes of Miranda lambert, Keith Urban, and Brad Paisley (out on May 28, the set’s appeal is broadened with appearances by Foo Fighters and Jennifer Hudson).
While Jewel is no stranger to the rodeo — she’s released two country albums since 2008 and is even married to a professional cowboy — she’s spurred interest in her new Greatest Hits with new duet arrangements of “You Were Meant For Me” and “Foolish Games,” featuring the Pistol Annies and Kelly Clarkson, respectively. Completists will be happy to hear the new recordings appear alongside the original radio edits of “You Were Meant For Me” and “Foolish Games,” both of which were re-recorded from 1995’s Pieces Of You prior to being released as singles.
Getting together with Kelly Clarkson to record “Foolish Games,” Jewel was mightily impressed with the Texan’s talent.
“[Kelly] grew up singing the song, she had sung it in several talent contests throughout her life. She really knew it inside and out,” Jewel says in a promotional clip for Greatest Hits. “I’ve always been a fan of her voice, but when you see her singing in person, it’s so effortless for her. There was one part where I was hitting a high note and I was at the top of my chest range and I was just barely squeaking it out and then she went in and did a harmony higher than that in full chest voice like it was nothing. She just has a God-given gift!”
Nothing foolish about that. Now where do I sign for the campaign to get their new duet released as a single? The combination of Jewel and Kelly might even best the original’s 1997 #7 peak.
