Lana Del Rey covers “Once Upon A Dream” from ‘Sleeping Beauty’

For Maleficent, the upcoming live-action reimagining of the 1959 Disney animated classic, Sleeping Beauty — this time told from the villain’s point of view — Lana Del Rey was enrolled to record “Once Upon A Time” for the new film’s end-credits sequence.

SleepingBeautyOnceUponADreamListening to Del Rey’s dark and moody rendition of “Once Upon A Dream,” I recalled the magic of Stay Awake, a 1988 compilation produced by Hal Willner that featured a collective of idiosyncratic talent covering songs from vintage Disney films. Sinead O’Connor’s hushed “Someday My Prince Will Come” (from Snow White and The Seven Dwarves) and Natalie Merchant & Michael Stipe’s delicate “Little April Shower” (from Bambi) are just two standouts.

Hopefully some enterprising someone today (at Disney or otherwise) is drawing a similar connection to the over 25-year-old collection. Lana Del Rey’s cover of “Once Upon A Dream” could be the catalyst for a Stay Awake, Vol. 2.
