Lily Allen Covers Keane, Skewers Robin Thicke
November 13, 2013 0 CommentsFor Lily Allen fans, Christmas has come early. Nearly five years after the release of her sophomore album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, she’s returned with an unexpected one-two punch.
First, Allen has covered Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” for this year’s Christmas commercial from British retailer John Lewis. Her take on the piano-pop band’s 2004 single soundtracks the story of a bear and a caring hare who makes sure his hibernating pal doesn’t miss celebrating a woodlands holiday. It brought a tear to the eye of a Bananaramian, and maybe yours too.
Following right behind, Allen has debuted her new single, “Hard Out Here,” co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin, though both the content less family friendly.
The clip is directed by Christopher Sweeney, who tells NME that he and Allen were having a bit of fun with sexism in the music industry. That much was clear from their parody of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” particularly the singer’s mylar-filled pronouncement of his endowment.
Showcasing both her sweet and salty sides in a span of several days, Lily Allen’s comeback is a proper one, indeed. Or as Adele tweeted this morning, “Lily is baaaack and as clever as ever.”
