Marie Moreshead covers Nazareth

Chances are you’re familiar with “Love Hurts.” Written by Boudleaux Bryant, the song was originally recorded in 1960 for an album by The Everly Brothers, whose biggest hits had been penned by Boudleaux and his wife Felice, including “Bye Bye Love,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” and “All I Have To Do Is Dream.” However, the pop duo never released “Love Hurts” as a single.

Roy Orbison, Jim Capaldi (ex-Traffic), Cher (twice, in 1975 and 1991), Kim Carnes, Sinead O’Connor, and Rod Stewart are just a handful of the artists who’ve covered “Love Hurts” in the 50-plus years since. Scottish rock band Nazareth are credited with the definitive take of the ballad, having reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.

The latest artist to give “Love Hurts” a go is Marie Moreshead, a singer-songwriter from Portland, Maine, who now makes her home in Los Angeles. Produced by Doctor Rosen Rosen, Moreshead’s introspective cover of “Love Hurts” was featured on the latest episode of The CW’s Ringer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Moreshead’s vocals are supported by simple instrumentation (piano, guitar) with the sound of crackling vinyl adding to the intimate feel. It’s hard to do something different with a song that’s been around for so long, but now in 2012, “Love Hurts” is the sound of getting a peek into someone’s most private thoughts, like reading a diary unbeknownst to its author.
